What, when and who?

Plant Potential was launched in 2022 by the Albert Schweitzer Foundation.

Background and goals

The consumption of animal products needs to go down and consumers want change – for reasons of health, environmental protection, global food justice and ethics. Food companies are key players when it comes to accelerating this necessary protein shift, by diversifying the resources in their supply chains and increasing the proportion of plant-based products. This seemingly easy-to-solve situation is often met with a desire for change by the food industry, but also with great uncertainty, a high demand for knowledge and sometimes a lack of effective prioritization.

We are committed to equip our corporate partners with practical and effective measures for a result-oriented diversification path and sustainable change. Through Plant Potential, we provide consultations, practical resources and networking opportunities. We work with companies to define ambitious and realistic goals, identify quick win measures to create convincing sales results as well as effective roadmaps for more complex transformations. Throughout the process, we ensure effective impact evaluation. Popular actions from our toolbox include plant-based default, recipe improvement, price parity as well as marketing measures and lowering food waste. Corporate partners can choose when and how to make the collaboration public – and we believe our program will lead to successes that companies will be excited to talk about.

Learning together

What is innovative about your initiative?

Malta Meat Free Week: The key aspect of the challenge is that it brings together multiple stakeholders. On one part we have the leading supermarkets and distributors who have offers and also through their venues help us to promote the challenge. We have restaurants participating with specials for the week. Then to help promote the challenge we call for the support of local influencers, local animal and environmental NGOs, media, social media, and in the past years we have also been using billboards.

Ghand il-Vegan: For season 3 of our TV show, we have given the program a new twist. Each program features a new vegetable (according to the time of year). We prepare two recipes; a main dish and a soup. Additionally, we have a nutritionist who explains the benefits and we also fit in an interview with a different vegan each episode. All this in a 24 minute program.

Which support is (or has been) essential for the success of the project?

Learning from other initiatives active in meat reduction and protein diversification.
